Level 1: SIP Errors Basics – Understand the Language of Failure

SIP response codes = HTTP-like status codes sent in replies to SIP requests (INVITE, REGISTER, etc.).

Families:

  • 1xx Provisional (trying, ringing)
  • 2xx Success (200 OK)
  • 3xx Redirection (301 Moved Permanently, 302 Moved Temporarily)
  • 4xx Client Errors (you did something wrong)
  • 5xx Server Errors (server problem)
  • 6xx Global Failure (don’t retry anywhere)

Example: 404 Not Found β†’ destination number doesn’t exist on that switch.

Illustration: SIP errors as traffic lights β€” green = 2xx, yellow = 1xx/3xx, red = 4xx–6xx πŸš¦πŸ“ž.

Fun Fact: SIP borrowed status codes from HTTP β€” that’s why 404 feels familiar. But in VoIP, 404 doesn’t mean the page is gone β€” it means your call is lost! πŸ•΅οΈ
